LOST and FOUND

"There was once a man who owned a hundred sheep" He said. "And while he was tending his sheep, one of those wooly little critters wandered away. So the shepherd left the ninety-nine behind and went out and searched for the one that was lost. And he kept on searching until he finally found it. He tenderly picked up the sheep, put it around his shoulders, and carried it back to the flock. Then he called some of his shepherd friends and said, 'Let's have a party. I found my wandering sheep!"" Jesus paused for a moment. Everyone was still listening. "Then there was a woman who had ten coins," He continued. "She lost one of them. So she lit a lamp, swept the house, turned over all the furniture, and searched relentlessly until she found it. And when she did, this woman was so happy that she called her friends and asked them to celebrate with her."...Keep Reading

Courageous Churches

Businessmen can provide sorely needed jobs. Wise educators can teach useful knowledge of the world. Self-help programs can offer effective methods of behavior modification. Advanced psychological techniques can aid self-understanding. And all of this is good. But can any of it truly transform the human heart? I believe that only one power exists on this sorry planet that can do that. It's the power of the love of Jesus Christ, the love that conquers sin and wipes out shame and heals wounds and reconciles enemies and patches broken dreams and ultimately changes the world, one life at a time. And what grips my heart every day is the knowledge that the radical message of that transforming love has been given to the church....Keep Reading

Embrace Your Limitations

Maybe you've heard the old adage, "Where God guides, he always provides." It may be more appropriate to say, "God often guides by what he doesn't provide." Read that again slowly and think about it in relation your life or church. God often guides by what he doesn't provide. Are you up against a wall with no good plan to get past it? Have you hit an obstacle that appears impenetrable? Maybe God will guide you to see something that you couldn't have seen if he'd just removed the wall....Keep Reading

Easter 09

“There is a stage in a child’s life at which it cannot separate the religious from the merely festal character of Christmas or Easter. I have been told of a very small and very devout boy who was heard murmuring to himself on Easter morning a poem of his own composition which began ‘Chocolate eggs and Jesus risen.’ This seems to me, for his age, both admirable poetry and admirable piety. But of course the time will soon come when such a child can no longer effortlessly and spontaneously enjoy that unity. He will become able to distinguish the spiritual from the ritual and festal aspect of Easter; chocolate eggs will no longer seem sacramental. And once he has distinguished he must put one or the other first. If he puts the spiritual first he can still taste something of Easter in the chocolate eggs; if he puts the eggs first they will soon be no more than any other sweetmeat. They will have taken on an independent, and therefore a soon withering, life.” ~C. S. Lewis...Keep Reading

People, Not Place

People, not place, make the church by Adriana Janovich Yakima Herald-Republic SELAH, Wash. — There's a new church in Selah. But don't look for another building with a steeple and a cross. When Harvest Community Church officially started earlier this month, it joined the growing ranks of churches without buildings of their own. At least three such churches have formed in the Yakima Valley in the past seven years, meeting for worship in high schools and other buildings. Sometimes called churches on wheels -- because they often store equipment in travel trailers during the week -- they are part of a nationwide trend. "It's not just happening here in Yakima," says John Schubert, senior pastor of Sun Valley Church, a portable church in East Valley. "There's literally thousands of churches in America doing this now."...Keep Reading

Picture This

Picture This- Several climbers were being rescued from the side of a mountain. The rescue helicopter was only able to reach each man one at a time because they had fallen on different areas of the mountain. As the helicopter and the rescue team got to each man, they would lower a rescuer down to that individual. That rescuer would go down and administer basic first aid- water, bandages, food and medicine- and would also announce the ultimate rescue that was to come....Keep Reading

CRASH

How do we get our arms around the mission of the church? What does Advancing the kingdom look like and am I willing to be a part of the mission? There are lots of questions facing a new church but we must remain focused on the fact that Jesus said... "I will build my church and the gates of Hell will not prevail against it." -Matt. 16. It is His church and He will build it! The truth is that Christ and His Kingdom will advance and CRASH forward and we have the privilege of joining this amazing movement. Buckle up. ...most groups of animals have unique names or designations when they dwell together. With insects most of us know that bees are called swarms, and ants are called colonies- a group of geese is called a gaggle, a group of guerillas is called a band, ... But my favorite of all is the group designation for rhinos....Keep Reading
