Christ Above All

October 9, 2022 Speaker: Jason Williams Series: Colossians // Christ Above All

Topic: Biblical

Colossians 1:15-20
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Key Understanding: Christ is Preeminent

pre·em·i·nence| prēˈemənəns | noun
the fact of surpassing all others; superiority

Seven Unique Characteristics of the Preeminence of Jesus

1. He IS The Image of God

John 14:8-10
8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

2. He IS The Firstborn of all creation
• He preceded the whole Creation
• He is Sovereign over all Creation

3. He IS The Creator of the Universe
• By Him
• Through Him
• For Him

4. He IS the Head of the Church

5. He IS the Firstborn from the dead
• Christ was the first to rise in an immortal body

6. He IS the Fullness of God

7. He IS the Reconciler of All Things
• Peace was obtained his blood
• Peace was obtained at the cross

Colossians 1:21-23
21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.
